What is die casting process?

Die casting is a metal casting technique used to produce metal components by injecting molten metal (Aluminum alloy, Zinc alloy or Magnesium alloy) into a mould cavity. Baoding Guokun can use this cost-effective metal casting process to manufacture high-quality and complex metal castings with tight tolerances and excellent surface finishes, such as gears, engine blocks, furniture handles and electrical components.

How does die casting process work?

The die casting process involves several steps, including mold design, metal preparation, injection, casting and finishing.

1	Mold design and production	The aluminum die casting mold is usually made from steel or aluminum, which is designed to withstand the high temperatures and pressures. Please mail the 3D drawing in .stp, .step or .X-T to Baoding Guokun. They will design the mold by CAD and produce it by CNC machine.
2	Metal preparation	Prepare the required aluminum alloy, magnesium or zinc alloy for injection. The alloy will be melted in a furnace and then poured into a ladle.
3	Injection	Inject the molten alloy into the mold under high pressure. The molten metal will fills the mould cavity and cools to create the desired shape.
4	Casting	After the desired parts has cooled and hardened, open the mould to eject the parts. Please ensure that the part has cooled entirely before handling to avoid any potential injuries.
5	Surface treatment	Surface finishing plays a vital role in die casting, as it can impact the durability and function of the part. Standard finishing processes include anodizing, powder coating.
6	Post-machining	Many net-shape or near-net-shape die casting components require minimal secondary precision machining process for holes, threads and other features.

Cast metal for die casting techniques:

Aluminum alloys: Aluminum is one of the common die casting metals, and aluminum die casting alloys are lightweight and offer good dimensional stability, which makes them a good choice for complex, fine-featured parts. Other advantages of aluminum die casting include outstanding corrosion resistance, excellent thermal conductivity, high electrical conductivity, very good strength and hardness, high operating temperatures and full recyclability. The common die casting aluminum-silicon alloys are A380, A383, A413, A443, ADC10, ADC12, EN AC46100, AlSi11Cu3, AlSi10Mg and other aluminum alloys. The AlSi alloys are by far the most important of all aluminum cast materials. Please check the following chemical composition of aluminum die casting alloys:

Zinc alloys: The most common zinc alloy for die casting process is Zamak; specifically, “Zamak 3” is widely used in the industry, with other variations like Zamak 3 and Zamak 5 available depending on the application’s specific needs. Zamak 3 is known for its strength, ductility, castability, and dimensional stability. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio, is resistant to corrosion, and has good finishing characteristics. Zamak 3 is made up of 96% Zinc, 3.8–4.2% aluminum, 0.035–0.06% magnesium, 0.003% lead, 0.03% copper, 0.02% iron, 0.001% nickel, 0.003% cadmium, 0.001% tin, and 0.02% silicon.
