Aluminum gravity casting process

ASTM A356 aluminum alloy is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and has good machining and casting properties. It's often heat treated to improve its strength, for example T4 or T6. The chemcial composition of ASTM A356 motor bearing end cover is made up of 92.05% aluminum, 7% silicon, 0.35% magnesium, 0.2% iron, 0.2% copper, 0.1% manganese, and 0.1% zinc.

Aluminum alloy motor bearing cover is often produced by gravity casting process. The gravity die casting process is a metal casting technique that uses gravity to pour molten aluminum alloy into a mold to create the motor castings or engine castings. What is aluminum gravity cascting process?

Aluminum gravity casting is a metal casting process that involves pouring molten aluminum iinto a mold cavity and allowing gravity to fill the mold. The aluminum will then naturally solidify to form the required aluminum casting components. The process is also known as gravity die casting or permanent mold casting.

How aluminum gravity die casting techniques work?

Aluminum gravity casting process
Step 1: Prepare the mold Coat the mold with a refratory material to prevent the metal from sticking.
Step 2: Heat the mold Heat the mold to a specific temperature to improve the flowability of the aluminum.
Step 3: Pour the metal Pour the molten aluminum into the mold using a ladle or automatic machine.
Step 4: Solidify Allow the aluminum to solidify in the mold.
Step 5: Open the mold Remove the solidified aluminum from the mold.
Step 6: Clean the part Remove the excess material and clean the aluminum gravity casting parts.

Advantage and disadvantage of aluminum gravity die casting process:

The aluminum gravity die casting method results in several advantages, including excellent dimensional accuracy, smooth surface finish, lower gas porosity, better grain sizes, and higher production efficiency. Compared with pressure die casting process, gravity casting techniques are lower tooling costs and more effective. And the gravity castings do not need any large or complex machinery to inject the molten aluminum into the molds.

But the aluminium gravity casting process is not suitable for OEM aluminum casting components with thin-wall and complex geometries.

Aluminium gravity casting, also known as permanent mold casting, is widely used to produce aluminum parts for many industries, such as automotive parts, transmission housings, cylinder heads, aerospace components, gearboxes, pump housings, pump body casing, valve bodies, motor shell, motor impeller, motor fan, motor cover plate, and all other customized parts.

Aluminum alloy grades for gravity casting:

The most common aluminum alloy grade used for gravity die casting is A356-T6. Due to its excellent fluidity, good castability, corrosion resistance and ability to he heat treated for improved mechanical properties, A356 cast aluminum alloy has good casting and machining perfomance, suitable for pump housings, impellers, high-velocity blowers, motor fan, motor cover plate, pump bearing end cover and all other structural castings which require high strength.
