The motor shell is the outer motor housing to protect the internal motor components from dust, moisture, and other environmental factors while also helping to dissipate heat generated during operation. Usually, the material of motor housing is cast iron ASTM A48 for the larger motor casing. But the material is no longer limited to steel and pig iron as in the past, the thin and lightweight stainless steel and aluminum alloy are also more popular. Gray cast iron motor shell

Gray iron is a cast iron with a graphitic microstructure that’s commonly used for its low cost and attractive properties. It is often used in applications where stiffness is more important than tensile strength, such as: Pump castings, motor castings, marine castings, valve castings, counterweight, agricultural castings and gearboxes castings.

ASTM A48 Class 35 gray cast iron, HT250, EN-GJL-250, GG25, FC250, FGL250, G25, T250, O125 or ISO Grade 250

The composition of gray cast iron is 2.5%-4% carbon, 1%-3% silicon, and some additions of manganese ranging from 0.1% to 1.2%.

Process of electric motor shell is lost foam casting process.

Lost foam casting is a metal casting process for creating metal parts by using a foam pattern that evaporates when molten metal is poured into it:

1. Create the foam pattern: The pattern is made from pre-expanded polystyrene (EPS) that is heated in an aluminum die to expand and fuse the beads. The pattern can be carved, machined, or created using injection molding.
2. Coat the foam: A ceramic refractory coating is applied to the foam to protect it from the sand and create a barrier.
3. Compact the sand: The foam pattern is placed in a flask and surrounded by unbonded sand, which is compacted using a vibration table.
4. Pour the metal: Molten metal is poured into the flask, causing the foam to evaporate and leaving behind the metal.
5. Remove the coating: The refractory coating is removed to expose the metal part.
6. Sandblasting and machine process.
