Furan resin sand casting process
Furan resin sand casting is a no-bake sand molding process, which involves using furan resin binder and sand to form molds for casting metal components. The metal resin sand casting parts produced by Baoding Guokun have better dimensional accuracy, better quality and improved smooth surface, compared with green sand casting parts.
Furan resin sand casting process
- Sand preparation: Mixing the silica sand with a resin binder and a catalyst that is conducive to hardening process.
- Molding: Filling the sand and resin mixture to the sandbox, after assembling the mold which usually made of wood or aluminum. Please pay attention to the uniformity of resin sand filling. Uneven filling can lead to differences in sand mold strength.
- Hardening: Hardening is very important in the furan resin sand casting process, which refers to the solidification and molding of resin sand in the mold. During the curing process, the resin binder undergoes a chemical reaction, making the resin sand hard and possessing a certain strength. The hardening time of resin sand is usually determined by the properties of resin binder and the required castings, and generally needs to be carried out under certain temperature and time conditions.
- Mold Removal: Once hardening finished, the mold or pattern should be removed to form the required cavity of desired metal components.
- Metal Pouring: Molten metal is poured into the above cavity.
- Cooling: After the metal has cooled and solidified, the sandbox is broken apart to reveal the cast metal parts. Then we could trim, sand blasting and machine them according to drawings.
Advantages of resin sand casting techniques
- Dimensional accuracy: The precise molding process and composition of resin sand casting results in highly accurate dimensions, which is important for complex-shape metal parts.
- Smooth surface finish: Furan resin sand casting produces a smooth and refined surface finish, which reduces the need for post-casting machining.
- Widely metal: A wide range of metals can be used for resin sand molding process, such as cast iron, mild steel, alloy steel, cast iron, ductile iron, gray iron, aluminum and bronze.
Grey cast iron, ASTM A48 Standard Specification for Gray Iron Castings, for example, ASTM A48 Class 30, ASTM A48M class 35, ASTM A48 class 40, etc. Gray iron sand casting are used in many applications, including automotive parts, brake drums, cylinder liners, engine blocks, gearboxes, flywheel, counterweights, pipe, valve casting, pump parts and so on.
Ductile or Nodular Iron, ASTM A536 Standard Specification for Ductile Iron Castings. ASTM A536 grade 65-45-12, ASTM A536 Grade 80-55-06, ASTM Gade 60-40-18, etc
Disadvantages of resin sand casting process:
Compared with green sand casting or clay sand casting, resin sand casting products is more expensive and need specialized molding equipment.
Compared with shell mold casting process, the furan resin sand casting can cause environmental problems.
